Guru Purnima(Vyasa Pournima) 2015: Meaning of Guru - The Day to Worship Teachers

The day of 'Guru Purnima' is traditionally celebrated on FULL MOON DAY in the month of Ashada(July/August) in every year. This year 2015, Guru Purnima is celebrated on July 31, 2015(Friday). The auspicious Vyasa Purnima is also called 'Guru Purnima'. According to Hindu Mythology Shri Shankara(Lord Shiva) is Adibhikshu, Sri Valmiki Maharshi, the great sage is  AdiKavi and Shri Veda Vyasa is Adi Guru.

Meaning of the Word The 'Guru':
The meaning of GURU is defined as 'GU' means 'Darkness' and 'RU' means 'Preventer of Darkness'. The person who drives out the darkness of ignorance and lights the lamp of Knowledge is 'GURU'. Our Hindu culture gives a significant place to Guru, next to our parents.
గురుర్ బ్రహ్మా  గురుర్ విష్ణుః గురుర్దేవో మహేశ్వరః
గురు సాక్ష్యాత్ పరబ్రహ్మా తస్మై శ్రీ గురవే నమః
Gurur Brahma Gurur Vishnuh  Gurur Devo Maheshvarah |
Guru Sakshyath Parabrahma  Tasmai Sri Gurave Namah ||
Meaning: Guru is equal to Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Maheshwara(Lord Shiva). The Guru is the Great God Himself. We offer Our Obeisance to You.
The Sishya(Student) who gets such a 'Guru' is a blessed One.

In Epic Mahabharatha, the story of Ekalavya shows the greatest relationship between the student and the teacher. Ekalavya, a tribal boy learned by worshipping mere image of Guru Drona though his Guru rejected him as his student. Shri Dhronacharya(Sri Drona) is royal Guru to Kauravas and Pandavas.

Shri Veda Vyasa Maharshi is the real incarnation of Lord Maha Vishnu. It is believed that there is no difference between the Saint Veda Vyasa and Lord Vishnu.
The Saint Veda Vyasa had classified the infinite vedas into four categories.
1. Rig Veda: The Rig Samhita to Paila,
2. Yajur Veda:  The Yajur Samhita to Vaisampayana,
3. Sama Veda: The Sama Samhita to Jaimini and
4. Atharva Veda: The Atharva Samhita to Sumantha
The Saint Veda Vyasa wrote The Great Epic Mahabaharat and also He penned Bhagavatha and AsthaDasa Puranas. Sri Veda Vyasa explained the Brahma Sutras to the world very explicitly.
