Vaikunta Ekadasi(Mukkoti/Putrada Ekadasi) Festival Date in 2015

Vaikunta Ekadasi, a Hindu festival dedicated to Lord Vishnu is celebrated on the Eleventh day of bright fortnight of the month Margasirsha [Margali](December/January). Vaikunta Ekadasi is called as "Mukkoti Ekadasi". "Ekadasi" means "Eleventh" in Sanskrit Language and refers to the Eleventh day of a fortnight belonging to Lunar Calendar month.
The auspicious Vaikunta Ekadasi festival will be celebrated on January 1, 2015(Thursday). The next day to Vaikunta Ekadasi is known as "Vaikunta Dwadasi" falls on January 2, 2015(Friday) as per the lunar calendar.
Different Names in Different Places:
In Kerala state, Vaikunta Ekadasi Festival is celebrated as "Swarga Vathil Ekadasi". 
In North India, Vaikunta Ekadasi is known as "Putrada Ekadasi".

This festival is celebrated in all Vaishnava Temples across the Globe with great devotion especially in South India. A special entrance gate known as Vaikunata Dwara is opened in all Lord Vishnu Temples and it is believed that one who have the darshan of the lord through this gate(Dwaram) on this day removes all sins in the life.

Vaikunta Ekadasi is specially celebrated in 
  • Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple Tirumala, 
  • Sri SeethaRamachandra Swamy Temple-Bhadrachalam,  
  • Sri Ranganatha Swamy Temple-SriRangam, 
  • Sri Padmanabha Swamy Temple-Thiruavanthapuram and other all temples dedicated to Lord Maha Vishnu.
According to our Indian puranas/epics, it is said that on this auspicious day,
  1. The churning of Ocean Milk(KsheeraSagara Madhanam) took place, 
  2. Lord Shiva consumed Nanju(Poison that was emanated from the churning of the milk ocean). Hence Shaivaites celebrated this day as Nanjunda Ekadasi. 
  3. Nectar of Immortality(Amrutam) was obtained. 
  4. Lord Krishna delivered Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna on the battle of Kurukshetra.
