Madurai Meenakshi Temple Timings, Daily pooja Details & Telephone Numbers. The abode of Lord Sundareshwar and Goddess Meenakshi

Madurai Meenakshi Temple is the abode of Lord Sundareswar, an incarnation of Lord Shiva and his consort fish-eyed Goddess Meenakashi Amman. This holy and famous temple is situated in the heart of Maduari City, Tamilnadu, India. The temple is popularly called as Madurai Meenakshi Temple and officially known as "Arulmigu Meenakshi Sundareshwar Thirukovil(Thirukoil)". 

In euphonic Tamil, the Goddess of the temple is also called as "Angayarkanni". The presiding deity of the temple Sri Sundareshwar is known as Meenakshi Sundarar  or Somasundar.

Significance and Importance of the Temple:
The Legend says that the scared Swayambu Lingam discovered by the Indra, King of Gods at Kadambavanam and later it was enshrined by him at Madhurai.

The original temple was totally destroyed by the Muslim Invaders during the 13th century. Later the temple was restored and completely re-built by the King Thirumalai Nayak during his regime 1623-1655AD.

The unique feature of the temple is the beautiful architectural structure of the temple populary known as "Ayiramkaal Mandapam", a Hall of Thousand Pillars. Each pillar features high, ornate and bold sculptures. It was designed in such a way that when the pillar is tapped, each pillar produces different musical note.

At present Sri Maduari Meenakshi Amman Temple is under the administrative of the HR and CE department of Tamilnadu, India.
