Tian Tan Buddha: Religious Importance and Significance of Big Buddha, Hong Kong

Tian Tan Buddha is a large Bronze Statue of the Gautham Buddha. It is also known as Big Buddha which is located at Ngong Ping, Lantau Island in Hong Kong. It is one the tallest Buddha Statues in the world and is very famous tourist place in Hong Kong. 

Religious Importance and Significance of Tian Tan Buddha Statue

With Face like a FULL MOON, a broad forehead, and elongated ears reaching almost to the Shoulders, the Buddha is shown to be in full possession of both Virtue and Wisdom and the Embodiment of perfection. His green lotus eyes, and his new moon eyebrows, are depicted in soft lines, symbolizing the eyes of compassion with which the Buddha looks on all sentient beings. Between the eyebrows, there is a curl white as snow and soft as cotton which twirls right, signifying that the Buddha is preaching the truth to all beings.

The right hand of Buddha is in the mudra of IMPARTING FEARLESSNESS indicating the compassion of the Buddha to save all sentient beings from their sufferings

The left hand of the Buddha rests on the Lap, with their palm turning up and fingers pointing slightly downward. This is called the mudra of FULFILLING of WISHES indicating the vow to grant blessings and happiness to all in the World.


On each of the palms is a DHARMACHAKRA(wheel of the Law) signifying that the Buddha Truth is erternal and will spread to the Ten directions of the Universe.

The 卍 Sign on the chest of the Buddha signifies that the Buddha possesses all Virtues.

The Buddha sits cross-leged on the Lotus Throne symbolizing that the Buddha is Pure and without any defilement.





Tian Tan Buddha is surrounded by six smaller bronze statues known as "The Offering of the Six Devas" and are posed offering flowers, incense, lamp, ointment, fruit, and music to the Buddha. The Six Devas are signifies SIX Qualities of a Human Being. These offerings symbolize charity, morality, patience, zeal, meditation, and wisdom, all of which are necessary to enter into nirvana.
